How Nottingham’s “Most Patriotic Street” prepares for the Euro 2020 final

Residents of what has been dubbed the most patriotic of Nottingham’s street have voiced their excitement ahead of the 2020 English EURO.

Pinewood Gardens in Clifton is completely covered in English flags and memorabilia hanging on houses.

It’s a street where you can feel the excitement in the air ahead of England’s grand duel against Italy on Sunday 11th July.

The English soccer team’s recent successes have made street parties much more frequent here – with neighbors saying it will get “manic” if England wins Euro 2020.

Resident Pauline Wright said, “England will win! I think we’ve come this far; we have to win now.

“I think the street gets manic when we win; it becomes absolutely manic.

“We have loads of street parties here and everyone is invited.

“One of the reasons I think England has come this far is because the churches come together and cheer them on.

“I used to live on the coast and didn’t think I’d ever settle here, but you come here and everyone on the street was so brilliant for me. I can’t blame anyone for anything. “

Locals say the closeness of the community helped make England’s tournament success even more enjoyable.

The local community often band together even when England isn’t playing.

John Blackmore, a resident of Pinewood Gardens in his 40s, said, “It’s been good since the semifinals – there will probably be a party if we win on Sunday.

“Since Covid and everything, we still manage to hold street parties, but at a safe distance for everyone.

“We’re generally out there anyway; we do all things together and take care of each other.

John’s wife, Susan Blackmore added, “I just feel lucky to live on a street where you can feel the closeness of the church – it’s just a beautiful street.

“No doubt we will all come out on Sunday; I think we’re gonna have a party!

“We have a news group called Pinewood Gardens so we can all know what’s going on and how everyone is doing, and we share photos and videos during the England game.”

Holly Brindley, who lives on the flag-covered street, said: “Usually at least a few of us get together when England plays.

“I think the general feeling on this street is just England fever!”
