More main roads are getting new money to improve transport connections, build new houses and convert unused spaces. This is an important milestone in increasing the government’s agenda.
In total, 72 main English roads – from Penzance to South Shields – will share over £ 830 million, 57 of which have been announced so far.
With pubs, cinemas, bowling alleys and more open this week, this funding will give cities a much-needed boost as they safely welcome shoppers and visitors to their main streets.
The funding is part of the government’s plan to protect, support and create thousands of jobs in a range of industries to provide opportunity and prosperity for communities across England.
Confirmed plans include:
- £ 17.28 million for Grimsby will create a new multiplex cinema and market food hall designed to increase visitor numbers in the city center. A new public space and event rooms will be created, which will give the main street more vitality and enthusiasm.
- Investment of £ 13.96 million for Taunton to build new homes, business premises and restaurants, as well as an outdoor event venue to increase visitor numbers.
- £ 6.28 million for Sutton-in-Ashfield to renovate the Sutton Academy’s theater area and convert vacant retail space into offices and restaurants. A new pop-up food and event space, as well as better pedestrian connections, will encourage more locals to visit the city center for special events and festivals.
Community Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said:
“This funding is part of a broader support we’re giving communities and businesses to protect jobs, support the most vulnerable, and make sure no one is left behind when we recover from a pandemic.”
“This investment will make a big difference to cities across England and turn into desirable places to shop, visit, live and work.”
“The Future High Streets Fund will support cities, towns and businesses as we get the most out of what the High Street has to offer again.”
The Future High Streets Fund was launched in December 2018 and is an integral part of this government’s plan to renew and redesign the city centers to make them more attractive places to live, work and visit.
This is just one of the ways the government is helping the retail and hospitality sectors.
