Artist creates Worksop station sign that celebrates the city’s landmarks

Kyle Emmerson, who was born in Worksop, said he was “amazed” at the positive reaction to the sign that landed at the train station this week.

The 32-year-old architect and freelance artist was hired to design the sign after the Community Rail Partnership saw his work online.

Former North Nottinghamshire college student Kyle explains what inspired the sign: “Architecture is a big part of my life and most of my art shows it in some way, it shapes our world.

“So when I think about how to represent a place, I always pay attention to the things that I think are unique and recognizable. For Worksop, we have some obvious choices and some less obvious choices.

“My goal was for people to look at the picture and get to know the places immediately without realizing how well they know them, such as the flour mills.

“I also wanted to show Worksop’s past and future, not just with the city’s old landmarks, but also with the new ones.

“Worksop actually has some beautiful buildings and a particular favorite of mine is the Bracebridge Pumping Station – I just had to give it a prime spot in the picture.”

Kyle has since been asked to design a similar sign for Gainsborough Railway Station.

He added, “I have visited many times and will likely take a similar approach and consider what is recognizable and unique about the city.

“Many of us are familiar with the historic Gainsborough Old Hall, but I think the purpose of these pictures is also to show people what else makes a place special.

“I was amazed at the reaction to the Worksop sign, so many people got interested in it and said how they liked it, it was extremely unexpected.

“It’s always nice to know that your work is valued and that the right message is being conveyed.

“I would like to thank the Community Rail Partnership for this opportunity and the Worksop staff for their support.”
