For some people in England, freedom was the first real drink in a bar, the euphoria of walking onto a dance floor at midnight or the opportunity to go shopping without fogging up your glasses.
For others it was a premonition and a desire not to throw away their mask yet, if only not to appear rude in a supermarket queue.
Sophie Allen and Joshua Devenish were only too pleased to take off their masks at their wedding yesterday at the Gilstrap registration office in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Allen, a retired Olympic swimmer from Caythorpe, Lincolnshire, and her husband celebrated their limitless wedding by tossing their face covers in the air. The registry offices reported fully booked for the rest of the week.
