Honiton u3a members look forward to meeting the public during National u3a day on Wednesday June 2nd to celebrate member learning, activity and fun and to encourage new members to join.
Honiton u3a describes itself as: “A group of 230 like-minded people who want to move from retirement to being inspired to enjoy the freedom that is their third age.” Members meet regularly to share educational, creative and leisure activities.
On June 2nd, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., they will have a stand in front of St. Paul’s Church so that the public can learn more about it. Your folk band and recorder group will also play.
From Friday, May 28th to June 4th, Honiton u3a is holding a “Spot The Teddies” competition. A number of small knitted teddy bears in yellow and blue by u3a will be hidden in shop windows around Honiton’s city center. Everyone has a label that says which u3a activity group they belong to. The closing date for entries is June 8th.
Registration forms will be available from the Honiton Library from May 28th, can be downloaded from the Honiton u3a website or collected from the booth on u3a day. All correct entries will be entered in a raffle.
There will be a Zoom lecture for current members on the history of facial hair on the afternoon of National U3A Day. Dr. Alun Withey from Exeter University will discuss such important questions as, for example, why big bushy beards were once the high point of fashion in a presumably “hair-raising” lecture.
Honiton u3a is conducting a series of monthly calls that are currently taking place on Zoom. Over the next few months, topics include Thoresby Colliery (the last pit in Nottinghamshire) and Beaver Trials on the River Otter. They hope to return to these talks after The Beehive soon, if government guidelines allow.
You also lead more than 25 interest groups covering topics as diverse as meteorology, history, photography, knitting, hiking, and wine tasting.
Honiton u3a chairman Peter Halse said, “We hope that as many people as possible will come to our high street booth and find out what u3a is all about. National u3a day is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate, learn, laugh and live the goals of u3a. “
