Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper gives a “disappointed” verdict on the defeat

Nottingham Forest had to fight on two fronts after losing 1-0 at home to Huddersfield Town in the final game of 2021.

Not only were the Reds missing a plethora of opportunities to get something out of the game, but boss Steve Cooper was particularly frustrated with the goal they conceded at the other end of the field.

It came from a move Forest had been working on ahead of the game when Duane Holmes teamed up with Harry Toffolo before defeating Brice Samba at his nearby post.

Despite their best efforts, the hosts were unable to hit the net, so Cooper’s side lost two times in a row.

“We didn’t win because we conceded a goal that we didn’t want to concede that way,” said the Welshman.

“We have done a lot of work in the last few days with toffolo and flat flanks in the area they were shooting from. It’s a real feature of Huddersfield’s threat of attack – they scored a lot of goals that way.

“I am disappointed that after a thorough examination we have admitted in this way.

“And despite all the opportunities we created, we couldn’t take advantage of any.

“That’s why we didn’t win.

“But I will not forget that we were by far the better team. We were the dominant team and played better football.

“In terms of performance, it was a good one. We just didn’t manage to stay clean and score a goal. “

The result came on the back of the 2-0 deficit on Boxing Day in Middlesbrough. But in contrast to this clash, Forest was the better team on the banks of the Trient – just in front of the goal.

“The idea is to play like this, to create these chances, but to score. That’s the plan, “said Cooper.

“I told the guys about the goals I conceded and the missed opportunities, but at the same time we played the game well. I told them keep it up, keep your head up.

“Nobody will be a little happy losing a football game, but at the same time I won’t be narrow-minded enough not to see that a lot of good happened during the game.”
