Obituary for Chris Carrell | Scotland

In the years before the lifting of the Iron Curtain, Chris Carrell assembled important seasons of contemporary art from Poland and Russia at the Third Eye Center in Glasgow. It opened in 1974 in an Alexander Greek Thomson building on Sauchiehall Street which is now the contemporary art center. Under Carrell, it became a major player in the city’s cultural scene because, as Robert Livingston noted in the Scottish Review, “two characters in an early episode of Taggart could talk about meeting at the Third Eye Center without a word from the Needing explanation for the audience ”.

Carrell broke the established model of art centers with non-traditional art forms. He was promoting an exhibition on the special unit in Barlinnie
