7½ miles; easy; downland paths

Through characteristic Sussex Downs landscape of dip and rise to Stoughton, where the Norman church of St Mary holds a tapestry depicting 1,000 years of village history. Climb past the memorial to Boleslaw Wlasnowolski, a Polish flyer shot down in 1940, and walk the downland beech and oak woods in their autumn finery.
