Thrilling matches for Newark and South Nottinghamshire Clubs in the hockey

It was difficult for the Newark Hockey Club 1sts to challenge Beeston as they were missing several key players and as a result, they suffered a 5-2 defeat.

Goals for Newark came from Oscar Tunnicliffe and Adam Baldwin.

The South Notts 1sts fared better as they played a crunch match against fierce competitors Belper.

One point separated the teams in the league division as South Notts looked to take control and won the match 5-1.

South Notts keeper Mark Doney held out Belper’s skilled attacks as his attacking teammates took it to Belper.

There were some great results in the hockey.

Cleverly worked goals were scored by Sam Clough, Dan Truman, Nathan Gerrard, Finn Collins, and Mike Shapland in a most dominant display of teamwork.

Southwell Brincliffe United traveled to Newark Ladies 1sts and started straight away as the stronger team.

The visiting side went into the break, 3-0 up before Newark managed to score a goal thanks to Melanie Woods finding the net.

SBU were able to consolidate their win with a final goal to take the game 4-1.

South Nottingham Ladies XI v Arnold Ladies

South Nottingham Ladies 1sts played at home as Arnold arrived with two players scheduled to arrive late, but they kindly insisted on the match starting on time.

South Nottingham did not hesitate to take advantage of the situation. Early on, Louise Price darted on the left wing, out of nowhere, through the packed Arnold defense to rifle home the first goal.

South Nottingham’s Sophie Runciman, Liz Foster, and Sophie Atkinson took cunning control of the midfield and were backed up by the South Notts defenders. Their skills at shutting down attacks and

creating new opportunities by cleverly reading the game.

The final score was 8-1 to South Nottingham.

Goals were scored by Louise Price, Ruby Ryan, Evie Bates, Alex McCusker-Stevenson, with Becky Humphris netting an impressive four.

The Newark men’s 2nds traveled to Derby with only ten players but within 60 seconds had taken the lead with good work from Jonah White feeding Logan Tustin down the left wing.

Tustin then beat the defense and hit it past the surprised Derby keeper. The ten men held on for the next 30 minutes before finally succumbing to the Derby pressure as the home side got a goal, taking it into half-time at 1-1.

The second half didn’t quite have the same explosive start for Newark Hockey Club with Derby finally realizing that Newark were a player down. Three quick goals put Newark on the back foot but not to stay down for long as more good work from Tustin and White saw a pass glide across the box for Tim McManus to tap in at the back.

As the ten men tired Derby added some late goals to end the score at

8-2, but with a full-strength team, the Newark club said it would have seen a very different result.

The University squad arrived at South Nottinghamshire with a sensational track record of success in the season to date.

However, the South Nottingham 2nds’ defensive wall stood firm and helped to set up counter-attacks.

The final score was 0-0 as both teams played hard but were unable to find a goal against evenly-matched opponents.
